HISTORY OF THE CONGREGATION

Background of the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi Congregation

The Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi is an indigenous congregation founded on 1st May 1923 by an Irish missionary, Mother Mary Kevin, in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. A religious institute with a Diocesan right, was founded in Uganda with the Mother House in the Diocese of Lugazi and the Generalate in Jinja Diocese

Aims for which the institute was founded

1.For the observation of the three religious vows: Poverty, Obedience and Chastity

2.By a life of prayer they implore divine Aid for the apostolic work

3.To perform works of charity in the first place in the education and upbringing of girls and the care of the vulnerable of our society basing on the signs of time.

The Little Sisters of St. Francis are spread throughout Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania in order to reach out to the poor and the needy, whom they are called to love and serve.

For easy administration, the Institute of the Little Sisters has been divided into six (6) Regions:  three (3) in Uganda, two (2) in Kenya and (1) in Tanzania.  The Regions are under the administration of the Regional Superiors, who are directly accountable to the Superior General and her Council in Jinja Uganda.

The Sisters are involved in apostolate works such as teaching (all levels of education), health care (in-patient and out-patient (including HIV/AIDS programmes, cancer and TB programmes), catechetical work and social services including taking care of vulnerable groups such as street children, orphaned children, single mothers, refugees, women prisoners, the aged and people with disabilities
